The Story of Ferdinand

"Once upon a time in Spain there was a little bull and his name was Ferdinand. All the other little bulls he lived with would run and jump and butt their heads together, but not Ferdinand. He liked to sit just quietly and smell the flowers."

Ferdinand isn't like all the other bulls in his field. He doesn't like to run around and fight the others and he definitely doesn't want to go to fight in Madrid. Until, one day, a bumble bee changes his plans.

Why I Love It

This is another story with a delightfully light storytelling feel which makes it a wonderful, natural read aloud.  The plot is both simple and deep with beautiful line drawing pictures that show tons of depth and texture.

Talking Points

  • Why did Ferdinand act differently from normal when the men came from Madrid?
  • How did other characters in the story feel about Ferdinand's differences from the other Bulls?
  • Have you ever known someone to act differently than they normally would? What different circumstances might have made them act that way?
