If you Give a Mouse a Cookie

"If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk.  When you give him the milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw."

A delightful circle story where one little boy learns exactly what kind of chaos can happen from the simple act of sharing a cookie with a mouse.

Why I Love It

This story is everyone's favorite circle story!  Since I am the kind of a person, like the mouse, who is easily distracted and moves at lightning speed from one task to another while leaving pieces undone I always get a laugh out of the pictures.  I love how the little boy in the story is so sweet and patient with the trying mouse.

You Should Know

There are other similar circle story books by the same author.  If you've fallen in love with the mouse and his cookie you might want to try If You Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Give a Pig a Pancake, or If  You Give a Dog a Donut.

Talking Points

  • Look back at the pictures.  What are some of the other effects of giving a mouse a cookie that are not found in the words of the book?
  • Notice all the actions and reactions in the book.  What are some of the other things that could have happened in the story if the mouse had made different decisions?
  • Can you write your own circle story that ends up in the same place it starts?
